Complex Dementia Care

A dementia diagnosis changes things. But with the right support around your loved one, patient, experienced and genuinely understanding, life can still feel safe, calm and full of dignity.

Complex Dementia Care

What is Complex Dementia care?

Dementia affects everyone differently. For some people, it can lead to changes in memory, behaviour, communication and physical ability that become harder to support at home or in settings without specialist experience.

Complex dementia care is designed for people with more advanced or challenging needs. It calls for more than clinical skill alone. It also requires patience, calm and a real understanding of the person behind the diagnosis.

At The Gables, we have strong experience in supporting people with complex dementia and challenging behaviour, including those who have not been able to settle elsewhere. Our specialist nursing team is chosen for both its expertise and its approach, so care feels safe, respectful and genuinely supportive.

Complex Dementia Care

Who is complex dementia care for?

Complex dementia care at The Gables may be right for your loved one if they are:

  • Living with moderate to advanced dementia, including Alzheimer's, vascular dementia or other forms
  • Experiencing distressed or challenging behaviour that is difficult to manage safely at home or in a standard residential setting
  • Presenting with a combination of dementia and other mental health or physical care needs
  • In need of 24-hour specialist nursing support rather than residential care alone

If you are unsure whether The Gables is the right fit, our team is always happy to have an honest conversation. There is no pressure, just a straightforward chat about your situation and what your loved one needs.

Complex Dementia Care

Our approach to complex dementia care

We know that finding the right home for someone with complex dementia can feel like an enormous task - especially if previous placements have not worked out, or if you have been told that a home cannot accommodate your loved one's needs.

The Gables is experienced in exactly these situations. Our specialist nursing team understands that behaviour which can seem difficult or distressing is almost always a form of communication. We approach each resident as an individual - learning what calms them, what unsettles them, what they enjoy and what matters to them - and we build their care around that understanding.

Mealtimes, activities and daily routines are designed with cognitive needs in mind. Families are actively encouraged to stay involved, share what they know about their loved one, and visit as often as they wish. And from the moment someone moves in, our team is focused on helping them settle, feel safe and experience the best possible quality of life.

I like it here at the Gables. The staff are very helpful and kind. My room is lovely and homely since they redecorated, and my family visit rather often.

Families often ask

When is specialist dementia nursing care needed?

It is often needed when caring at home has become unsafe or unsustainable, when behaviour has become very difficult to manage, or when a person's physical health needs require qualified nursing support alongside their dementia care. If you are not sure, speak to your GP or a social worker - or simply call us for an honest conversation about what your loved one needs.

What should I ask when visiting a specialist dementia care home?

It is worth asking about staff training and experience with complex needs, how the home manages distressed behaviour, what a typical day looks like for residents, how families are kept informed and involved, and what happens if a resident's needs change significantly over time.

Can a person with complex dementia still have a good quality of life in a care home?

Yes - and this is often one of the things families are most worried about. A specialist home that truly understands complex dementia focuses not just on managing behaviour or meeting physical needs, but on helping each resident feel calm, safe and as engaged as possible. That might look different for everyone - familiar music, a particular activity, time outdoors, meaningful one-to-one contact - but the goal is always quality of life alongside quality of care. Families often tell us that their loved one is more settled in the right environment than they were in the months before moving in.
