Respite Care

Caring for someone you love is one of the most meaningful things you can do. It is also one of the most demanding. Respite care gives you time to rest, with the confidence that your loved one is somewhere genuinely caring.

Respite Care

What is Respite care?

Respite care gives you the chance to step back, knowing your loved one is being looked after in a safe, comfortable and supportive setting. Whether you need a short break, time to recover yourself, or help during a change in circumstances, respite can offer valuable peace of mind.

For your loved one, a respite stay can be a positive experience too. It gives them the opportunity to settle into a welcoming home, enjoy good food, take part in activities and spend time with other residents, all while receiving the care and support they need around the clock.

At Absolute Healthcare, both The Gables and Swan House offer respite care.

Respite Care

Who is respite care for?

Respite care may be the right choice if:

  • You are a family carer who needs a break - for a holiday, to recover from illness, or simply because you need time for yourself
  • Your loved one's regular carer is temporarily unavailable
  • You are going into hospital or dealing with an unexpected situation and need cover
  • Your loved one has recently been discharged from hospital and needs short-term support before returning home
  • You would like your loved one to experience care home life before making a longer-term decision

Respite stays can last from two weeks to several months, depending on what you need. Our teams will always talk through the options with you openly so you can make the right choice without pressure.

Respite Care

Our approach to respite care

We know that handing over the care of someone you love, even for a short time, takes trust, and we take that seriously.

When your loved one joins us for a respite stay, they are treated with the same care and attention as any long-term resident. They will have their own private room, and you are welcome to bring familiar items from home to help them feel comfortable and settled. They will be included in mealtimes, activities and daily life in the home, not treated as a temporary visitor.

And for you, we want respite to feel like a real break. Time to rest properly, knowing your loved one is safe, well supported and in good hands.

I like it here at the Gables. The staff are very helpful and kind. My room is lovely and homely since they redecorated, and my family visit rather often.

My Mum has been @ Swan House for 3 weeks now and is thoroughly enjoying the excellent care from all the team there. She feels far more safe in this environment and I can see she is far happier. Many thanks to all.

My husband passed away on 3rd November. His care was excellent. The nurses and staff were kind, loving and considerate in every way. I shall always remember the Gables and would highly recommend them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love and best wishes.

Visited a resident on his birthday, and carers were excellent in making sure he enjoyed his birthday. Music, singing of happy birthdays other residents shared his birthday cakes and photos taken.

Families often ask

How long can a respite stay last?

Respite stays at our homes can last from two weeks to several months. If your needs change while your loved one is with us - for example if you need to extend the stay unexpectedly - we will do our best to accommodate that and will always keep the conversation open.

Will my loved one be properly cared for during a short stay?

Yes. We treat every respite resident with exactly the same care and attention as our long-term residents. They have their own private room, they are fully included in daily life at the home, and they receive the same level of nursing or residential support as anyone else with us. Many families tell us their loved one genuinely enjoyed their stay.

Can a respite stay lead to a permanent place if we decide we want one?

Yes, and this is actually something many families find helpful. A respite stay gives your loved one the chance to experience life at the home before any long-term decision is made - and it gives the care team a chance to properly understand their needs. If, after a respite stay, you feel that a permanent place would be the right next step, we are always happy to discuss that. There is no pressure either way.
